Matching Sunglasses to Face Shapes: A Radical How-to Guide

Radical Yes Sunglasses

By Kerryn Moscicki, Radical Yes Founder & Brand Director

Sunglass shopping can be a mystery. First of all it is near impossible to see your face in the mirror through a dark lens, and second of all it can be hard to know which silhouettes are going to be more than fast trends.

Whilst sunglasses season is well and truly with us now, living in Australia it’s a pretty fair bet you will need sunglasses at least 300 days of the year. So as the Summer sun fast approaches, we offer up these ideas for ‘tran-seasonal eyewear dressing’ - shapes that we guarantee will carry from Spring all the way into high summer and beyond.

Round Faces
Round faces have full cheekbones, a narrow forehead and jawline. Often the key for a rounder face is to counter the soft shape of the face with sharper lines in the sunglass meaning squarer options will be your best friend.

Our pick in this group has to be our best selling ‘Happy Looks Good On You’ in Crystal Green. When we opened the mold for this glass, we set the frame to be a thicker edge finish than your usual injected sunglass measuring around 0.6mm thickness through the frame. This gives the glass a feeling of weight and smoothness in the handle, similar to a hand made acetate frame, minus the expense of that process.

The green has been our best selling colour in this glass and for good reason - asides from being the most brilliant pitch of green (which you will note matches with many pieces from the footwear collection), this colour behaves more like black on the face - especially when finished with the soft smoke lens. As a result this colour matches a really broad range of skin tones - from blonde and fair through to the deepest olive and brunette hair combos. The best bit is, this green offers a hint of colour in a really wearable way.

Square Shape Faces
Square faces have a broad forehead and square set jawline. Many squarer face shapes believe they can’t wear a smaller frame however we would argue it all depends on the frame shape and is one of the reasons our fine rim Joy Sunglasses work so well, especially in the Milky palette.

We always approach the design of each of our eyewear capsules with a sense of evergreen styling. Looks that can be worn literally for years and still feel fresh every season and is one of the reasons the key silhouette that we come back to again and again is our original ‘Joy’ sunglass. Super fine rim, rounded without being oversized and set with the right amount of vintage - it is a glass that suits all kinds of face shapes, especially square.

For a classic 1940s influence, we recommend the Milky palette. This season we have made this option in hand made acetate and finished it with a brown smoke lens. The lens offers depth of colour to the cooler tones of the frame and means that even a squarer set face can wear this smaller frame shape. Surprisingly the Milky tone looks equally beautiful on dark skin - where it provides contrast - as it does on fairer complexions where there is a lucid creaminess to the palette making it an easy pick for lot’s of face shapes. Yes!

Heart Shape Faces
Heart Shaped Faces have a wide forehead and cheekbones and a narrow jawline. Heart shapes look amazing in round set and cats eye shapes making our Radiance in Mottled Tort the perfect go-between.

With a slightly ‘wingier' tip for an almost cats eye feel, contrasted with a softly rounded rim shape, the thicker set frame of our Radiance glasses provided dramatic impact without being too oversized. The uniquely mottled tones of this acetate give a marble like finish to the frame lending accents of caramel and jersey grey making them as wearable on the weekend with stripes and denims as they are during the week for more corporate commitments. The handle and weight of the acetate is beautiful as well and provides a level of luxe not often seen at this price point. It’s for this reason that we love this frames flexibility. Useful and beautiful. Radical Yes!

Oblong Faces
Oblong Faces are long with narrow jawline and cheekbones. The silhouettes that work best are oversized and as a general rule this face shape is better to avoid narrow frames. Larger styles are great and so our pick for this face shape is our square set ‘Happy Looks Good on You’ glass in Tortoiseshell.

Another best selling colour from this capsule, the square set, oversize detail of the frame is made even more bold by the heavier tones of the tortoiseshell frame. Set with a darker smoke lens the look is pure French cool and will cover up the earliest morning starts. The combined honey and rich chocolate tones set through the frame provide a feeling much more luxe than the amazing price point might suggest, making them super wearable for many different occasions. This has been one of our best selling glasses to date because of its deeply universal appeal.

Oval Faces
Oval faces are balanced in shape. Forehead cheekbones and jawline are equal in width. This is often considered the ‘lucky’ face shape amongst Optometrists and those in the industry, because almost all frames suit, though raised nose-bridges are especially great to emphasise the cheekbone. Because of this we always recommend Oval shapes go crazy with a bit of bold colour.

This season our pick has been the radical solid tone Pink of our Radiance sunglass. Set in the thicker frame shape, the pitch of pink is softened through the softer Brown lens which becomes almost tonal in the match to the frame. You can read more about our love of solid colour dressing here to find out why we love this detail so much, but essentially it’s the conviction of colour that we are feeling right now. The pink is playful and fun without feeling too junior and certainly has an air of conviction that we love to match with other pink elements in our outfit. Think a vintage wash blush tone tee-shirt and our pink ‘The Magic Slides’ with denims to set the mood for weekend fresh.

The best thing is all our sunglasses feature Australian Standards Approved Category 3 lenses, executed in non-graduating colours to ensure the safest level of protection for a driving glass level lens. Combined with the fact that 10% of the profit from the sale of our sunglasses goes to our Not-For-Profit-Partner Wear For Success, these are glasses we guarantee you will be loving for many different reasons for a long time to come. Something we think is quite radical, yes!
