As we slide (pun intended) into a slight delirium of end-of-summer commiserations, we have been thinking about how much we love ‘The Magic’ leather slides we made this summer and how to take them with us on the journey into Autumn.
Part stubborn refusal to give up on the sheer comfort that is this shoe, and part experimental meandering ideas we have been testing, the question I have been toying with most is - can you wear slides with socks, and can you especially do so post 40?
After a short internal test that included asking my 4 year old, my 9 year old and my husband - survey says Yes! Key things to consider in this equation include the day of the week (weekend dressing cuts the idea better), and the occasion - (we’re leaning daytime for this look, but we also don’t mind a bit of luxe irony with contrast satins and long line things as seen on the radical Karlie Kloss above).
To keep the feeling sharp we recommend lots of solid colour dressing up-top - try block colours that match back to the palettes on these toe tappers. Our favourites include all-red-everything as per the story we told here (worn to perfection on dear Krista from Mutual Muse above).
Explorations in shades of pink also work when spliced with other intentionally-clashing prints. We love how wonder woman and Radical Yes muse Evi-O does this trick. The key is to keep the socks textural - clean and pulled up for true athletic inspired proportions.
For weekend easy, matching the whole thing with mixed denims makes for a relaxed dressing mood. We love the contrast of heavy black socks with a light palette shoe (try our Pink variation) like the look below for an effortless approach to gallery hopping.
We also love to juxtapose the lazy feel of this look with more formal long line dresses as Karlie Kloss shows us how to do above. We love the humour of a pulled up athletic sock, but if this all feels a bit too Jay-Z, a black fishnet sock with a super structured outfit on top - think jersey separates that basically stand up by themselves - can also make for a more polished, and admittedly more ‘fashion’ mood.
Still not convinced? One of our favourite Autumn ways to wear slides is with fitted at the waist long line skirts, especially in heavy handle textiles like brushed cotton and denim. You can leave the socks behind with the heavier weight of the skirt and make like a dancer (or dear Freja seen below) with a black fitted singlet for Indian Summer days.
Whatever your take - whether ironic ath-lesiure, or ‘I woke up like this’ easy at the weekend cool - we can guarantee you will be super comfortable and equipped for chasing said 4 year old on whatever adventures you find yourself in! Radical Yes. x
